Note:
It's important to acknowledge that discussing family can be a sensitive topic for some individuals. Memories, experiences, and emotions tied to family can vary greatly, and it's perfectly okay if you find it difficult to talk about your own family. Whether due to painful past experiences, complicated relationships, or other reasons, your feelings are valid. Remember, you have the option to participate in this activity without divulging personal details about your family. If you prefer, you can imagine or create a family that brings you comfort and joy. Your well-being comes first, and it's okay to set boundaries around what you're comfortable sharing. Take care of yourself as you engage in this activity.
Step 1
Draw a picture which represents your family. Write a paragraph to describe what you drew in the picture. Include information about who is drawn in the picture, where the family is, how do you get along, when do you meet, and any other information which you think is interesting about your family.
Step 2
Now share the drawing and description of your family with your buddy. Ask questions about each other’s family to find out more.
Step 3
Think: Have you come to realise that families may also be different? What are these differences?
Have a discussion about this with your buddy and take the opportunity to develop your own description adding more about diverse families.
You may also share this script with your family and have a discussion with them too about diverse families!
Create
Now reflect on each other’s drawing, description and conversation you have had. Think about the common elements and list them together.
Write a short story about 'What a family is for us.'
You can use the text you wrote and add more exciting and interesting information. You can also add authentic images or drawings.
Reflect
What did you discover about different types of families? Reflect upon issues which may crop up within a family. Think of any negative and positive emotions which may emerge from facing such issues.
Use all of the information you have learnt during this learning unit to create a postcard together which represents an imaginary family in the future!
Ask your educator to login and share your postcard with the KIDS4ALLL community.
