Who am I online?
Is that you?! This question comes usually when a friend looks at your old pictures. But not only! Online we tend to give an ‘edited’ picture of ourselves and our reality. Let’s see what are the reasons and what is the impact it has on you!
Warm up
“Like air and drinking water, being digital will be noticed only by its absence, not its presence.”
Nicholas Negroponte wrote this in the 90es and he was right, don’t you think?
Discuss with your buddy:
If the Internet hadn’t been invented, who would you be?
- How would you use your time, how would you get information, how would you keep in contact with your friends, what music would you listen to, what things wouldn’t you know…
Learn
Our reality is postdigital!
Postdigital doesn’t mean that the digital is over.
Not at all! It means instead that it is so much part of our everyday life that we don’t even notice it!
It is quite normal for many to use their smartphone daily and post pictures, video call friends, chatting… maybe for you too.
You might have noticed that you are who you are depending on the people you met, the experience you did, the things you have learned, online and offline.
But who are you and what do you show of yourself online?
Watch this video with your buddy
Dive in 1
Think of the different platform you are in and of the profiles you have there and share with your buddy your answer to his question:
Who are you online and what information do you share about yourself
★ privately (just for people you know)
★ semi-publicly (accessible by a group of people,
though you don’t know all of them personally)
★ publicly (accessible to anyone)?
Dive in 2
All human beings need to feel appreciated. This means we all wish that the others like us, at least the ones we like!
Social media give us the chance to present ourselves but that is at the same time a bourdain: how to present ourselves in a way that the others will like us?!
Do you use photo editing and other tricks or you prefer to give a more natural and spontaneous version of yourself?
Share your habits with your buddy and discuss how satisfying or stressful that is for you.

Now think of 5 words that best describe yourself and 5 for your buddy.
Share your results.
Now list 5 things about your image online that match the 5 words above and 5 things that don’t.
What do you observe?

What is the difference between feeling good and looking good?
Many people say that they feel less self-confident since they started to post on social media, they feel very much depending on the likes they might (not) get and they compare themselves with others, how they look, what they do, how many likes they get…
How is it for you?
Share your thoughts with your buddy.
Done?
Now think of a message which might help people not to lose their self-confidence on social media and make a meme!

What are the pros and cons of being on social media?
You have 4 minutes and 44 seconds to find as much as pros and cons as possible.
Make sure that both sides are covered!
Done?
Now get together with another buddy-team: it’s time to debate!
How?
Read here the 5 steps!
Welcome back! Now it’s time to exchange your impressions about the debate you had.
What did you learn about yourself and about social media?
Share your answers and at the end write down together the list of all pros and cons, make it look good and upload it on the work.it area!
Reflect
Reality is quite complex, isn’t it?
Like in the case of social media: you cannot say it is just good or just bad. It depends!
So…
How would be social media a better place for you?
Would you like to change anything about your use of it or of the way it works?
Share your thoughts with your buddy and create a postcard, why not showing something around you how it is in real vs. edited?
Ask your educator to login and share your postcard with the KIDS4ALLL community.
